Final stuff

Project…Last opportunity to turn in any part of the project (-20%) is May 11. Last opportunity to present is May 10 at the start of class.

Final Exam Review sheet – this is all the chunk review sheets in one place.

Final Exam Review/Remediation: This was provided ans explained in class on Monday April 30th. There will be a limited amount of class time to work on this the Monday and Tuesday of Finals week. You should work on 3-4 every day and you will be prepared for the final and improve your overall grade at the same time. It should all be done before you walk in to take the final exam (May 23 or 24).

All review all the time

Today was the last Summative 20Q, optics. That’s it, physics is over, well except for the final exam next week.

So the rest of our time on Monday and Tuesday will be for final exam review opportunities for you, starting with the formative final exam Monday. You will then use this as a guide for your preparations for the final exam.

Don’t forget to finish up your Final Exam Review assignment. It is worth a 20Q summative and is due by the time you start your final exam.

Mirrors v. Lenses

Thank you to those that tried to do your homework last night, you probably got more out of today’s discussion because of your effort. I went through each diagram on the board and we discussed the various uses of those mirrors. Finished up with the Mirror and Lens Inquiry activity based on what we have drawn. Tomorrow I will show you how the lenses actually work…followed by the formative assessment (12q). At this point you should have most everything done from the Optics Packet (I – VII). The only part we have not done is the law of refraction notes (VIII). Remember all the Optics work is due before you take the Summative Assessment on Friday.

Here’s the powerpoint I used in class today.

Don’t forget to work on the Skills Tutor/USA TestPrep review assignment

I’ve been workin’ on the….

…curved mirror diagrams, all the live long day! Today was just finishing the tutorial and the practice worksheet for Easy Rays on curved mirrors. Make sure you have the practice sheet done before class tomorrow, I will be checking them.

Keep working on your final exam review at Skills Tutor and USA TestPrep. This was provided in class on Monday the 30th of April. It needs to be completed prior to taking the Final Exam…do as much as possible it can only help your grade on the final and in the class.

Reflections of…

Mostly light and an upright arrow as our object of choice. Today we worked through Part III of the Optics packet. If you were not able to finish in the time provided, make sure you have it done by Friday for full credit. The last 30 minutes was dedicated to you working through the curved mirror tutorial up to the red dot on page 6. Make sure you have reached that point (get it) before you come to class tomorrow. The tutorial is available through the “Tutorials” link at the top right of this page. If you need another copy of the diagram look in the “Labs” link. More reflecting tomorrow…

Can you tell if these dogs and cats are looking at other dogs and cats or are looking in a mirror?

The end is near…

…but it looks far away because we are looking in a convex mirror. Seriously though, we are working on the final chunk of physics here at Hillgrove, Optics (mirrors and lenses). Today we did the law of reflection and a reflection activity to reinforce your angle measuring and to see how the light really does reflect. Hopefully your lab was signed off (25/25) by the end of class, otherwise your homework is to finish it so it can be signed off Monday.

Remember that light reflects at the same angle it hit the surface.

The Light 20Q was returned.

Keep Working on your Final Exam remediation as listed on the instructions provided in class Monday April 30th.

Did you see that? Can you believe it?

Here we are…Day 5 of the Light Chunk. Had a different remediation activity where you got to work in groups to draw out what we learned this chunk (light is a visual concept). Then the 20Q summative assessment for Light.

Your homework is the same for Day 5, but for the last time…define the key terms for the Optics Chunk. That’s right…this is the final chunk for the course. Be ready to get after it tomorrow, there’s a fairly decent amount of individual practice during this chunk. It’s really the best way to learn how mirrors and lenses work. Bring a pencil, you may even find colored pencils useful if you have some.

Finishing light

Today was just a final discussion of afterimages as well as the refraction and polarization of light. Now you should know how rainbows and 3-D movies work.

Had the 12Q formative assessment today. Click here to view the answers with some explanation. Remember that you will see these same concepts on the 20Q summative assessment tomorrow, study. As always on Day 4 your homework is to finish the review sheet.

OOOOOOOOOO….AAAAAAHHHHHH!

Retinal torture

No, not actual torture of any kind…put the phone down. When you stare at something for more than 5 or 10 seconds and look away you will see an Afterimage, or a fuzzy opposite colored image of what you were looking at. What happens is the nerve cells on your retina become desensitized as you stare at the same object. For example, stare at a blue sock. Your blue cones are stimulated by the blue light from the sock and you see blue. The red and green cones are doing nothing when all of a sudden you look away and the blue cones are no longer stimulated, your brain then over interprets the lack of blue as red and green. If you look away at a white background the effect is enhanced as the red and green cones are suddenly stimulated and more noticed by your brain than the blue, so the afterimage is red plus green = yellow. So, all the lab today was just that, stare at various pictures and colors and observe the afterimages in order to determine the relationship between the actual color and its afterimage. The labs will be turned in tomorrow.

Be sure you are doing your homework…look at the daily agenda to see what it is…hint: read between the lines…|Review sheet L-S and finish yesterday’s homework.|

Stare at me then look at a white background.

Oh so colorful

Today was all about the interaction of light with different materials and colors of light and pigment. I hope you enjoyed the various colors and filters. Make sure you know the primary colors of light and how they mix to create the secondary colors. Make sure you complete the table of various colors of light shining on various colored pieces of paper. Read through the color algebra and the instructions above the table, we discussed a few examples in class. Tomorrow we will discuss all this and torture your retinas with afterimages.

And don’t forget…The Electromagnetic Spectrum Song (by Foo and Yann)…it may not be the best tune, but it gets the point across…over and over and over and over and…

May the fourth be with you!

What can I say…I grew up with Star Wars and still love it. Have a great weekend.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel…and it is the final fourteen. That’s right, only fifteen days until the end of the course and two of those day are final exam days. Be sure to stay focused these last three weeks. We will try to keep it entertaining and interesting with our final two chunks…light and optics. This is all about what you can see and how light is produced and interacts with our environment.

Today you played with some different materials and explored how they interact with light. We then discussed light, electromagnetic waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. See the PowerPoint for light to review (we got through slide 23 or so). Be sure to do your homework: review sheet A-E.
